Mr. Levin engages Mr. Weiland, the former chief risk officer for the C.I.O. unit, about e-mails that a JPMorgan employee who helped craft the new risk models had sent. Mr. Weiland says that the employee was too caught up at times in the mathematics of the risk modeling and not paying attention to bigger issues.
Mr. Levin notes that Mr. Weiland had held a discussion with the employee over the phone, rather than over e-mail. Mr. Weiland says that he wanted to better convey a message to the employee. But the senator thinks there was an effort to avoid a document trail.
